BABYLONIAN GEOMETRY-MATH TABLET 1750 BC Large stone tablet, 9.5 inches length (25 cm) x 7 inches width (17 cm), half inch thickness (15 mm), with display stand, back-label ID, description sheet & graphics of geometric theorems. Reproduction British Museum Babylonian Mathematical Text (BM 15285) from the early second millenium BC. Originating from the Eighteenth century BC city of Larsa in southern Iraq, the tablet is a 3,800 year old mathematical textbook that, notably, includes a problem involving the construction of an equilateral triangle. It represents one of the oldest mathematical diagrams ever found and the earliest known use of the Pythagoras Theorem ...preceeding Pythagoras by at least fifteen centuries. Inscribed in Akkadian Cuneiform, the tablet outlines several geometry problems with specific geometric shapes drawn inside squares of 60 rods (representing about 360 meters) on a 4 x 4 grid of smaller squares. They are organised in increasing order of complexity, without solution or numerical answers, giving a clear impression of teaching aid or text book. Each of the illustrated problems (which remain in whole or in part) carry a written description of the figures in the accompanying diagrams, along with the general question, "What are their areas?" Students are believed to have solved the problems on small hand-tablets. The combination of both text and diagrams has allowed researchers to extrapolate most of the missing figures and technical terms. The tablet has achieved great notoriety amongst mathematicians and remains controversial because it provides hard evidence that the ancient Mesopotamians used the "Pythagorean Theorem" a very long time before the Greeks.
