This is a vintage 1960's or 70's reproduction of the original 1920's poster. Our mistake is your gain, here it is again.Don't let it get away from you this time.Up in this sale is a 1960's or 70's reproduction of a very rare Soviet propaganda poster from the Russian / Soviet Revolution period 1917-1921. Originally published in 1921 in Moscow by Gosudarstvennoe Izdatelstvo. It features the classical hero Bellerophon, astride the winged horse Pegasus, as he leads the struggle to combat illiteracy and Distribute Knowledge. This winged horse employed by the Soviet Union in 1920 to encourage mass education with the slogan, "Literacy--the Path to Communism" is a variation of Pegasus. The torch-bearing young man, Bellerophon, holding an open book and riding a powerful steed soaring high above the city is an image designed to inspire. Linking communist ideology to the winged, immortal horse of Greek mythology aligns that political doctrine with an easily understandable and very potent idea--that to fly is to dominate, to conquer. It measures approx. 20 1/4" x 28 3/4"Nice condition for age. Please see photos as part of condition description.
