( 35" x 17" GLASS ENCASED & FRAMED )Mary & Jonathan Elber were an integral part of the California mid century
art movement and had their own gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The thriving art community is considered by many the heart of the mid century
California Modern art renaissance!Mary Elber started making batiks after learning the elaborate
wax and dye technique, that has a stained glass luminosity
and a mosaic style, from a friend who came back from Kathmandu, Nepal
after doing a tour in the Peace Corps! She was a natural and first gave batiks
as gifts to friends and then found herself inundated by requests and so she
and her young husband, Jonathan, entered the art world!Their works were coveted and they opened Village Artistry Gallery which
primarily featured their own works.
Jonathan joined Mary and took art classes at UCSC. They were featured
in newspapers for their inspired artistry and were well loved by
the Carmel art community.Conservation was part of the culture of the Monterey region - then - and now. Mary and Jonathan created "Otter Moon" as a labor of love.This poster is an incredibly rare piece of art history. "Otter Moon" was
a batik made to help fund preservation of the otters that could be found in
the Pacific waters off the California coast. Proceeds from the sales of the poster
were donated to a group dedicated to Otter and Environmental preservation.
Very few were made, but all of them sold and now are one of the
rarest CA art history collectibles in the marketplace!The work is incredible! The colors, details are iconic mid century interpretation
of the seas. This was the Rachel Carson era and this *love* of the ocean
and nature is found in the otters and every creature, star and wave
depicted in this art. Ironically, most batiks from the mid century period have long since turned to dust!
Placed in open windows to capture the light, the California sun soon took its toll.
This poster preserves the beauty of the Elbers' work and has made it
available decades after the batiks faded away.Tragically, Jonathan Elber died within weeks of the completion of
"Otter Moon" and it was the last artwork he completed with Mary.This poster now stands as a wonderful artifact of California mid century art history
- and Environmental/conservationist history as well. No others have hit the
marketplace in well over a decade. A once in a lifetime opportunity
for the California Modern Art collector!The poster is in its original frame and in very fine condition. A light water spot
is visible (imaged) at the very bottom of the poster.
