The images of the Mother of God flanked by Sts.Matthew, the apostle James the Great, Sts. Anna and Thekla.MOTHEROF GOD "JOY TO ALL WHO GRIEVE" WITH GUARDIAN ANGEL. The Mother of God "Joy to All Who Grieve" stands full lengthin the upper central zone of the icon, a scepter in her right hand and anunfurled scroll draped over her left arm. An almond-shaped mandorla with goldrays frames her figure. Huddled in two tiers to either side of the Mother ofGod are four small groups of naked, ailing, grieving, and afflicted humansseeking Her intercession. Two angel hovers behind each group bringing succor.Inthe space beneath the Mother of God is the Holy Virgin Mary of Seven Swords, also presented up to the waist Holy Virgin Mary andfacing the viewer directly. In the rectangular spaces to either side of thecentral panels are the two male and two female saints Mother of God flanked bySts. Matthew, the apostle James the Great, Sts. Anna and Thekla. The whole composition is loosely joinedtogether by a lush calligraphic framework of acanthus leaves on a latticeworkground that twine around the six registers.A bright red border separates the image of saints from the polio and theacanthus motif is repeated along the brown filenka.
