This enameled porcelain bust is a fine example of French porcelain manufacturing at its height. The maker, identified by the anchor mark under its base, is that of Vion & Baury c.1875. The rare signature under the shoulder is that of the renowned French sculptor Charles Levy.Charles-Octave Lévy, born in Paris on April 20, 1840 where he died in the 11ᵉ arrondissement on April 28, 1899, was a pupil of Armand Toussaint, and exhibited several statuettes at the Salon, from 1873 to 1898. He obtained an honorable mention in 1887 and a third class medal in 1889. He died in 1899.
The bust stands at 24'' in height and is heavy. It appears to be in perfect condition. The decoration is intricate and delicate. I can find no chips or damage. Although I would expect some hairlines on a piece this old, none are evident to my eye. The subject is "Romantic", a young maiden from an earlier era (Rococo). Her innocent, gentle face appears forlorn. The pink upside-down rose on her bodice is a symbol of unrequited love. Her heart has been broken. Her face and expression bare a resemblance to Adele Hugo en mal d'amour.
