An Exceedingly Rare 1954 Chairman Mao Signed Gift to Russian Marshal Bulganin:
$60000.00

An exceedingly rare and most certainly unique dedicated and signed presentation piece given by the Chinese Communist Party leader and Head of State Chairman Mao Zedong to the USSR Soviet Russian Marshal Nikolai Bulganin on the occasion of the celebrations of the 5th anniversary of the formation of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The Soviet Russian delegation to China at that time was led by Nikita Khruschev and included Marshal Semyon Budyonny and Marshal Nikolai Bulganin. At that time Marshal Bulganin was holding the position of a Minister of Defence of the USSR. Several similar presentation pieces were handed over by Chairman Mao to members of the delegation, including photo albums, presentation objects, etc. All of them were specifically prepared with dedications and signatures of Chairman Mao.The present piece which was personally presented by Chairman Mao to Marshal Bulganin comprises a large 21cm / 8.3" in diameter unique hand painted round porcelain plaque in a seldomly seen propaganda design, depicting a Soviet Russian worker and his Chinese counterpart embracing each other in a brotherly hug underneath both national state Flags. It is important to consider that a Cultural Revolution propaganda painting showing such a close Russian and Chinese relations is very rare to come by. The porcelain plaque was painted and manufactured in one of the former Chinese Imperial porcelain workshops and is signed within the painting with a four character mark reading "Chun Yi Tang Zhi”.The porcelain plaque is placed within a large silk lined box, whereas the inside of the lid bearing an embossed in gold dedicated inscription in Russian reading: "To the Minister of Defence of the USSR N.A. Bulganin in memory of the Chinese people. Chairman or PRC, Mao Zedong", followed by Mao's autograph signature signed in gold autopen. The box is in an almost ideal square form and measures 26x26cm / 10.2"x10.2", the lid having the Chinese state seal atop.Provenance: acquired from previous owner through descendants of Marshal Bulganin.
During same 1954 and following 1959 meetings, two similar Chairman Mao presentation pieces were given to the Soviet Marshal Budyonny and a reference of their sale sales include the following details:1. A Mao Zedong Signed Presentation Copy of the Tenth Anniversary of the People's Republic of China with dedication in Russian and signed with an autopen in red with an sale estimate of A dedicated in Russian, but NOT signed Chairman Mao cloisonné enamel lidded pot in a silk lined box, which was sold several years ago through a Russian sale sale for nearly 1 million roubles. Regrettably, the piece was missing Chairman Mao’s signature in autopen, hence the lower hammer scarce and unique historical memorabilia collector piece of the highest degree.
