Two Masks

Circa 1950 ("circa" meaning 3oyrs either way which puts them well within the potlatch ban). Cedar. Kwakwakaʼwakw tribe: D'sonoqua (Gugwame' sa Dzunuk'wa) and Nogad, who sings the song of the gadaxanis, a group of dancers who re-enact the arrival of a Tlingit chief and his slaves.These are real masks that fit perfectly on an adult male's face.Possibly feast-dish covers? These came out of the same Kitsap County Estate and both appear to have been carved by the samecarver. The white oneis a thinner, finer carving and appears older. It hasa superior darker cedar grain with a beautiful aged patina.From the outside, it looks like it doesn't have eye holes but when you hold it up to your face you can see out. We believe the paint is oil paint which supports them beingbanned pieces (acrylic paint wasn't introduced until the late 1940s). Minor age flaws and repairs as pictured. We have these in the non-native category only because they are unsigned and pre-date themodern Pacific Coast's tribal Arts & Crafts Movementthat began inthe 1970s. Measure about 9" and 9 1/2" tall.
