Extremely High Grade 1860 Stephen Douglas Portrait Flag. Beautifully framed. 8 x 13 inches glazed cotton. Extremely rare museum-quality piece. In fact, of the very few examples known, one resides in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute.

“Threads of History” by Herb Collins documents only three Douglas portrait Flags. Text in striped field reads "For President, Stephen A. Douglas, Vice President, Herschel V. Johnson."

This is a particularly choice example, virtually perfect and in our opinion easily superior to the few other examples seen at sale over the years, the last example in 2019. Past old sale records at Heritage and Hakes both exceed $17,000+.

In all respects, this is an absolute top notch 1860 portrait campaign Flag.

Addition note on Douglas portrait campaign Flags: The record sale price for any 1860 Douglas campaign Flag is $93,750 at Heritage in 2016. That example is the same size but is rarer (with only two known) but this offered Flag is THE classic 1860 Flag design and because decades ago there was a find of 7 or 8 (of which this is one of, if not the, finest), the Douglas Flag offered here is in far superior, virtually perfect condition.
