Antique Rare Model Ship HMS Victory 1896-1915.

This model ship was made in Germany and I bought it from a 95-year-old man who claims that his grandfather brought it back from world war one. He does not know when it was made prior to that, but said 1896.

It does have an old small metal tag on it that says made in Germany. It has detailed cloth sails and rigging, an an intricate wrought iron figurehead. It is roughly 48 inches long and just under 4 ft tall. The shop is pretty spectacular and I would imagine someone went through great labor and cost to build it. It probably took several years to do so.

My father tried to buy the ship in the 90s for $7000, but the owner turned it down. I actually ended up buying it and my dad passed away weeks after. I was happy to be able to tell him that I had acquired it. Two weeks before I ever even was contacted by the ships owner, I was gripped by a painting depicting the HMS Victory in a restaurant from the early 1800s. Funny how the laws of attraction work.

The original ship itself had many different remodels to it and of course was the Flagship of the British Empire under the legendary Admiral Horatio Nelson who died victoriously on the ship during the battle of Trafalgar. The masthead of course is changed through time, but at the time that the ship was made historically it had a woman figurehead. I’ve had some tell me this isn’t the victory but it actually has “Victory”carved into the stern.

Another funny story is I was telling a good friend about it and he told me that his great great great great great grandfather was actually the De Villeneuve from the French army that lost to Horatio Nelson. What a small world.

It is said in the Old Testament that the Lord gave King David victory wherever he went. I haven’t really won much in my life, but I would imagine this to be true. I like to think of this ship as the personification of that.

I circled where Nelson was shot and killed on his vest. In a bittersweet moment in history, Admiral Nelson did triumph at the 1805 battle and as a result put a halt to Napoleon's scheme to invade England. But this amazing naval hero paid for his victory with his life, dying aboard HMS Victory.

After being told on hi deathbed they had defeated the French, [Nelson] then told Captain Hardy, "he felt that in a few minutes he should be no more;" adding in a low tone, "Don't throw me overboard, Hardy." The Captain answered: "Oh! no, certainly not." — "Then," replied His Lordship, "you know what to do: and," continued he, "take care of my dear Lady Hamilton, Hardy; take care of poor Lady Hamilton. Kiss me, Hardy."

The Captain now knelt down, and kissed his cheek; when His Lordship said, "Now I am satisfied. Thank God, I have done my duty."
