By the shores of the river Brenta, in one of the most charming parts of Bassano del Grappa - near Vicenza, in the North-East of Italy - stands a historic building which houses the first Italian manufacturer of writing instruments. Here the "Manifattura pennini d'oro e penne stilografiche" ("Maker of gold nibs and fountain pens") was founded in 1912. During the First World War Bassanowas a centre of military operations. Among the many soldiers who used the company's pens (Elmo at that time) for their correspondence were two celebrated 20th centur writers, Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos, who had both volunteered for service as ambulance drivers. In the Thirties the company enjoyed its most magnificent phase. It was a period when the fountain pen became widespread and the productsof the house of Bassano met the taste of the public with their sober design, the variety of their colours and materials (among the first to use celluloid and galalith), the perfect operation of their technical solutions, and the originality and precision of their manufacturing techniques. These are the values on which Montegrappa still relies today for the creation of its regular lines, rich in fascination and distinction, andcapable of expressing the personality of those who use them. On the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of its foundation, Montegrappa launched its first Limited Edition of 1,912 pieces, immediately gaining the approval of collectors and connoisseurs throughout the world with its use of traditional exclusive craftsmen techniques. Freely inspired by great historical events, the culture of the past or mankind's deepest emotions, the limited edition pens today represent the pinnacle of Montegrappas production. Acquired at the end of 2000 by one of the great world leaders in the luxury goods sector, Montegrappa today, in its regular ranges as well as in its limited editions, still preserves its characteristics of craftsmanship of the highest level in creating authentic jewels, for the pleasure of writing by hand.
On the tenth anniversary of the Limited Edition dedicated to the Dragon, Montegrappa is creating a valuable duo of oriental mythology by giving the Dragon its traditional companion, Eternal Bird: Feng Huang, the phoenix, the immortal bird which can rise reborn from its own ashes. Just as the dragon is the symbol of the Chinese emperor, the phoenix is actually the effigy of the empress. Today the symbol of rebirth and individual spirit and always the symbol of the eternal death and rebirth of nature through the cycle of the seasons, the immortal bird appears with slight modifications in many far-flung transformations, through its constant association with the sun and with fire. In parallel with the Eternal Bird pen, commissioning the sculpture from the same artist who gave life to the Pins galoration per accuited-veling the sophisticated technique of die-casting, a technique of the highest craftsmanship of which Montegrappa has always been the master. From the original sculpture, whose creation took the artist many months of work, copies are cast in precious metal, finished by hand and enhanced by two brilliant-cut rubies. The sculpture is then applied to the block of the purest rock crystal from Madagascar which contains the ink. This is closed by bamboo shoots, the food of the pheasant in oriental culture, executed by die-casting, on which the beak of the Eternal Bird rests. A remarkable object for enjoying a pleasure which Montegrappa well understands, the pleasure of writing by hand.Montegrappa has created a precious inkwell in a limited edition.
THE TECHNICAL PROCESS DIE-CASTING
Die-casting is an ancient technique that dates from the 5th century, and in the course of the intervening years it has changed very little. Used in jewellery since time immemorial, Montegrappa employs this fascinating technique on its writing jewels. From the original sculpture, which creation takes the artist many months of work, copies are cast in precious metal using the technique of lost wax. The procedure begins with the creation of a mould of the sculpture which is then filled with molten wax. Once this has set, it is an accurate replica of the original sculpture. The wax models are inserted in a metal container that is then filled with liquid plaster and fired in a special oven. The wax melts at 180' C (356° F) and flows out of the container through a hole in the base. The plaster continues to be fired until it reaches a temperature of 750" (1,382° F). Next the plaster mould is cooled to a temperature of 600° C (1,112° F) and molten gold or silver is then poured into it. The metal solidifies in about fifteen minutes. After this time the metal container is immersed in cold water. The temperature difference causes the mould to break, releasing the sculpture that has been formed inside it. At this point, the expert hands of skilled craftsmen come into play: details are engraved with a burin, and the long and elaborate process is completed with the polishing, giving life to exceptional works of art.
THE INKWELL BASE IS CARVED OUT OF THE SINGLE PIECE OF NATURAL MADAGASCAR ROCK CRYSTAL2.5" IN DIAMETER AND 2.25" TALLAND THE ETERNAL BIRD IS EXECUTED IN SOLID 18 KARAT YELLOW GOLD.
