Karl Bodmer \"Dance of the Mandan Indians\" Antique Original Aquatint Lithograph:
$2295.00

Karl Bodmer \"Ischoha Kakoschochata\" Vignette 25. This is an original antique hand colored aquatint Bodmer lithograph print, from ca.1840 titled \" Dance of the Mandan Indians\". It measures 11\" x 14\" (larger dimensions are likely hidden under matte) and with the matting and frame is 23\" x 25\". It has the raised \"C. Bodmer\" seal on the bottom of the paper, which is the authentication mark of the initial publication of these prints. Karl Bodmer (1809—1893), was a talented Swiss artist who journeyed in the early 19th Century with Prince Maximilian, a German scientist, to record the daily life of Native Americans on the western frontier. This expedition was made in preparation for publication of \"Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832—1834\". As they traversed the territory between Boston and present-day central Montana, Maximilian collected specimens, and documented his scientific observations of the flora and fauna and the tribal life they met. Karl Bodmer visually recorded their findings in beautifully detailed watercolor paintings. Their nearly ten year collaboration continued in Europe in 1834. In Germany, Maximilian completed writing the text from his copious notes, and in Paris, Bodmer focused on the subtleties of printing 81 hand-colored aquatint engravings for their folio. This is one of the original vignettes originally published as part of the complete work of Karl Bodmer’s illustrations to Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied’s \"Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832—1834\" which included 81 hand-colored prints of Bodmer\'s paintings. These 81 are comprised of 48 folio-sized prints and 33 smaller vignettes, such as this one available for purchase.
The following is imprinted in the lower margin: \"Karl Bodmer pinx. ad nat.\";\"Imp. de Bougeard.\"; \"N. Desmadryl sculp.\"; \"Coblenz bei J. Holscher.\"; \"London, Published by Ackermann & Co. 90. Strand. November 1th, 1840.\"; \"Paris, Arthus Bretrand, editeur.\" Note that this is an original print from the 1839-1842 edition. It is not a re-print such as the fine Oppenheimer Limited Editions (numbered to 200) published in 2011. which sell for roughly 1/10th the price. There are also many contemporary printings of Bodmer\'s works, similar to John James Audbon, because the copyrights on these artist\'s works from the mid-1800\'s have expired, and they are now considered \"public domain\".I apologize for the weak photography: This is framed behind archival museum-quality glass to protect it, but makes taking pictures very difficult. In the last photo you should be able to see the embossed stamp on the paper in the margin below \"Ackermann & Co. 90\", espeially if you enlarge the picture. Please write with any questions, including how I came to own this rare item, as I realize it is a true investment in a historical work. If you are not satisfied with your purchase I will grant a return and refund on this item. Thanks for your patronage.
