Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Vincent van Gogh Limited Edition 90 Fountain Pen

Great artists throughout history have expressed the human experience in a universal language of form and beauty.
The Montblanc Masters of Art Collection honours their immortal contribution to the quest for perfection in art - a quest Montblanc both celebrates and participates in. The story of human civilisation could not be imagined without artists, their creativity, their view of the world and their moving masterpieces. In recognition of that fact, Montblanc dedicates this series of limited editions to a variety of visual artists, whose work encompasses a broad range of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to design and architecture, covering different epochs like the Renaissance, the Baroque era or Impressionism period and beyond. The golden ratio, a timeless aesthetic principle connecting many of the world's most admired artworks, inspired the proportions of every writing instrument created for the Masters of An Collection.

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was already 27 years old when he became serious about art. He had been searching for a vocation since the age of 16, first working with an art-dealing firm, then as a teacher in England, and later living as a lay preacher among coal miners in the Borinage, Belgium, where he first framed his artistic conceptions. What he experienced there nurtured his desire to serve his fellow man. Art was his chosen means to that end, and he set about honing his skills. In the mid 1880s, his brother Theo used his position in the art industry to open doors in Paris, where Vincent encountered the light-infused paintings of the Impressionists. He eagerly absorbed the influences around him, including the fascination with Japanese art known at the time as Japonisme. Like many fellow artists, Vincent van Gogh marvelled at the freshness of traditional Japanese woodblock prints, which he started collecting, and even adopted some elements of their composition into his own paintings. The overall silhouette of the Limited Edition 90 is shaped like a Japanese wood-cutting knife or hanti-toh as a symbol of Van Gogh's personal fascination with traditional Japanese woodblock prints. The shape of the solid Au 750 yellow gold cone recalls the cutting blade of this knife.

Features:
  • Genius needs no lessons-Once he set his heart on being an artist, Vincent van Gogh worked intensively to succeed, devouring instruction books to improve his knowledge of drawing techniques and colour theory. He often tested colour combinations before painting, using balls of wool that he kept in a box and holding the coloured yarns next to each other. Laid out for comparison, Vincent van Gogh's yarns would have made a pattern of lines similar to the lacquer-filled engraving that encircles the forepart of the writing instrument in contrasting colours of blue and orange - a tribute to his colour studies. Just as he gained his command of colour through practice, Van Gogh also learned to overcome the challenges of perspective. Identifying his need for a visualisation aid that would enable rapid, accurate execution of any composition, he came to rely on a device called a perspective frame. It was a wooden frame with strings stretched across it to show the convergence of perspective lines towards a vanishing point at the centre. The triangular subdivision created by the strings inspired the shape of the cap top, while the engravings on the fittings are inspired by the screws holding the frame together. This tool helped Vincent Van Gogh, especially when painting in the open air, to set up a realistic portrayal of what he saw and then capture the light and atmosphere in swift brush strokes.
  • Drenched in sunlit colour -In 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris in search of new inspiration, new light conditions and tranquillity. He found all of these in the town of Arles in southern France, where he fell in love with the sun-drenched landscapes and settled down to capture the beautiful colours of nature. Vincent's art blossomed in this Environment, as he poured his talent into expressing the golden glow of fertile farmland and the natural rhythm of rural life. He breathed magic into ordinary scenes using buoyant colours and an emotional, impasto style. In impasto painting, thick paint is applied in rough strokes to create a topography of coloured layers that visually coalesce into an image rich with depth and character. Vincent van Gogh's impasto was intense, pushing the technique to a new level where the paint was thick and deep, the colour potent and the strokes of the palette knife vigorous. This groundbreaking technique is interpreted by hand in the captivating artwork adorning the cap and barrel of the Limited Edition 90. Inspired by masterpieces such as The Harvest, the handcrafted artwork is composed of colours used by Van Gogh for his visions of Provence: warm yellows, resonant oranges and soothing greens. Each writing instrument is unlike any other in the way exuberant strokes of colour fuse into a satisfying whole, giving this edition the lyrical quality of a painted canvas and transforming it into a work of living artistry. The engraving of "Arles' on the cap top emphasises the importance of this place to his life and art. Embedded in the cap top in a field of blue lacquer like one of Vincent's bright stars - an image found repeatedly in his works - is the Montblanc emblem in orange lacquer surrounded by solid Au 750 gold. The year Vincent van Gogh moved to Arles is commemorated in an engraving of '1888' alongside the signature 'Vincent' on the barrel ring. Those years he spent in the South of France were the most intense period of his career. This was when he freed himself from restraint and allowed the dazzling southern sunlight to work its magic on his artist's soul, resulting in almost 190 paintings.
