The year before his death, the renowned American stage actor declines a role in a Broadway play
Autograph Letter signed: "John Drew.", 2p, 5¾x8, front and verso. No place, but New York City, 1926 February 25. On monogrammed stationery to Broadway producer William A. Brady, Jr. Begins: "Dear Mr. Brady". In full: "Many thanks for your kind invitation to participate in the forthcoming revival of 'The Two Orphans, which I am however, reluctantly obliged to decline. With renewed thanks & regrets - I am Very Sincerely Yours". Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. 1½-inch tear at right margin at mid-horizontal fold affects one word on front and one letter on verso (paper intact and all legible) and blank integral leaf, which is lightly soiled and has stray ink marks on verso. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope, 6x4. No place, no date. Not stamped, indicating it was hand-delivered. Addressed by Drew to: "Wm. A. Brady Jr./The Playhouse." Lightly creased and soiled. Torn at lower portion of back flap. Otherwise, fine condition. The Two Orphans, a revival of the Broadway play first staged in 1874, ran at the Cosmopolitan Theatre from April 5-May, 1926. In 1926, Drew appeared in one Broadway play, King Henry IV, Part I, which ran at the Knickerbocker Theatre from May 31-June. His commitment to this production was likely the reason for declining the part offered by Brady. WILLIAM A. BRADY, JR. (circa 1900-1935) was the son of Broadway producer, director, theater owner/operator, house manager and performer WILLIAM A. BRADY (1863-1950). In the month of this letter, Brady was producing two Broadway plays, The Great Gatsby and a revival of Little Eyolf. JOHN DREW, JR. (1853-1927), the eldest son of American Shakespearean actors John Drew (1827-1862) and Louisa Lane Drew, made his acting debut in Philadelphia in 1873 under the management of his mother. By 1879, he was the leading man in Augustin Daly's Company and was equally popular with audiences and caricaturists. Drew, who was best known for his characterization of Petruchio, made his Broadway debut in 1902 (The Mummy and the Humming Bird) and appeared in numerous plays on the Great White Way until 1927. His sister, Georgiana, married Maurice Barrymore and was the mother of actors Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore. Drew acted with his niece and nephews at the Waldorf-Astoria in the 1890s.
