AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #5 (1963) — CGC 8.5 — STAN LEE AUTHENTICATED AUTOGRAPH

Offered for sale is one of the special books remaining from my longtime personal Amazing Spider-Man collection: The Amazing Spider-Man #5, Marvel Comics, October 1963, graded CGC 8.5 VF+ with Off-White Pages.

This is a major early Silver Age Spider-Man issue featuring Doctor Doom's first appearance outside Fantastic Four, a Fantastic Four cameo, a classic Steve Ditko cover and interior artwork, and a story by Stan Lee.

What makes this particular copy especially special is the large Stan Lee autograph on Page 1, which has been authenticated by JSA and encapsulated by CGC under the CGC x JSA Authentic Autograph program. The authentication is clearly noted on the yellow CGC label.

AN IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THIS COPY

Stan Lee signed the interior first page rather than the front cover.

For me, that has always been part of the appeal of this particular book. You get a large authenticated Stan Lee autograph while Steve Ditko's wonderful original 1963 cover remains completely unobstructed.

The signature itself presents beautifully at the bottom of the first page and can be clearly seen in the accompanying photograph.

ABOUT MY COLLECTION

As a young boy, my fascination with superheroes led me into what became a lifelong journey collecting The Amazing Spider-Man.

Over the years I spent countless hours searching comic shops, attending conventions and connecting with fellow collectors. Eventually I assembled an Amazing Spider-Man collection running from issue #3 through #400.

These weren't books I acquired recently to resell. They were my personal collection, assembled and enjoyed over many years.

About two years ago, I made the bittersweet decision to begin selling the collection. Many of those comics have now gone to new owners, but I held onto several of the books that were particularly special to me.

This ASM #5 is one of those books.

I've enjoyed these comics for many years, but I've reached the point in my life where it's time to pass them along to other collectors who can appreciate the history, artwork and memories represented by them as much as I have.

It isn't particularly easy to part with books like this one, but I hope it finds a new home with a Spider-Man or Silver Age Marvel collector who will enjoy owning it for many years to come.

ABOUT THE AUTOGRAPH AUTHENTICATION

For complete transparency, this is a CGC x JSA Authentic Autograph book.

It should not be confused with a CGC witnessed Signature Series book. Stan Lee's autograph on Page 1 was authenticated by JSA and is identified as authentic on the CGC yellow label.

Please refer to the photographs of both the CGC label and Stan Lee's actual signature.

CONDITION

CGC has professionally graded this comic 8.5 VF+ with Off-White Pages.

The photographs are of the actual comic being offered for sale, not stock photographs. Please look carefully at the high-resolution images to evaluate the slab, label, cover presentation and overall appearance for yourself.

In my opinion, this is an especially attractive copy of a very difficult early Spider-Man issue, and the interior placement of Stan Lee's signature allows the classic Steve Ditko cover to display exactly as originally published.

MARKET CONTEXT

Amazing Spider-Man #5 in high grade is an increasingly difficult early Spider-Man book.

For reference, current GoCollect market information shown in my accompanying research indicates an estimated FMV of approximately $5,750 for an unsigned CGC Universal 8.5.

GPA sales information also records a $6,600 September 2025 sale of a CGC 8.5 Stan Lee-signed copy.

That $6,600 book was not identical to this copy. It was a CGC witnessed Signature Series copy with White Pages and an Ohio Pedigree designation. I mention it only as a useful comparable for collectors evaluating the market for Stan Lee-signed copies of ASM #5 in CGC 8.5.

A comic of this value deserves considerably more than ordinary comic-book packaging.
