Art Deco Biplane InkwellThe Biplane Inkwell by Franz Reichenberg is a silver plated novelty desk companion formed in the shape of an early twentieth century biplane, produced in Berlin during the Art Deco period circa 1925.
The aircraft is constructed from silver plated metal with a streamlined fuselage, detailed propeller and fixed landing wheels. The pilot and gunner positions are occupied by two removable glass inkwells fitted with silver plated screw top lids integrated into the upper body of the aircraft.
The upper wing and tail are engraved with WWI German Air Force style markings, while the wing is signed by the manufacturer “FRANZ REICHENBERG BERLIN D.R.P. 728643”.
Novelty desk accessories inspired by aviation became increasingly popular during the interwar period as advancements in aircraft design captured public attention throughout Europe. Pieces such as this combined practical function with the streamlined industrial styling associated with the Art Deco movement.
