George IV(George Augustus Frederick; 12 August 1762– 26 June 1830) wasKing of the United Kingdom of Great Britain andIrelandandKing of Hanoverfrom the death of hisfather,King George III, on 29 January 1820 until his own death ten yearslater.
He had already been serving as Prince Regent since 5February 1811, during his father's final mental illness. George IV was theeldest child of King GeorgeIII andQueen Charlotte.
He led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to thefashions of theRegency era. He was a patron of new forms of leisure, style and taste. He commissionedJohn Nashto build theRoyalPavilioninBrightonand remodelBuckingham Palace, andcommissionedJeffry Wyatvilleto rebuildWindsor Castle.
George's charm and culture earned him the title "thefirst gentleman of England", but his dissolute way of life and poorrelationships with his parents and his wife,Caroline of Brunswick, earnedhim the contempt of the people and dimmed the prestige of the monarchy.
He excluded Caroline fromhis coronationandasked the government to introduce the unpopularPains and PenaltiesBillin an unsuccessful attempt to divorce her.
Despite presiding over theBritish Empire's emergenceas a global hegemon, his rule was tarnished by scandal and financialextravagance. His ministers found his behaviour selfish, unreliable andirresponsible, and he was strongly influenced by favourites.
During most of George's regency and reign,Lord Liverpoolcontrolledthe government asPrime Minister of the United Kingdom. Liverpool'sgovernment presided over Britain's ultimate victory over Napoleon andnegotiated a peace settlement with the French.
After Liverpool's retirement, George IV was forced toacceptCatholic emancipationdespite opposing it. His only legitimatechild,Princess Charlotte, predeceased him in 1817, so he was succeeded byhis younger brother,King William IV.
