DescriptionThis is a museum-quality Breguet à Paris silver pocket watch, a rare survivor from the Napoleonic era. At 53mm and weighing a substantial 95 grams, this "oversize" timepiece was designed for prominence and presence.
The reverse features a magnificent, enamel portrait of Emperor Napoleon I in full military regalia riding a horse. The dial is a pristine white enamel with classic Breguet numerals and elegant hands, signed "Breguet à Paris."
The Movement: The Verge FuseeUnlike more common later movements, this watch is powered by a Verge Fusee mechanism.
The Fusee: This is a cone-shaped pulley connected to the mainspring barrel by a delicate miniature chain. Its purpose is to equalize the power as the spring unwinds, ensuring the watch keeps consistent time from fully wound to nearly empty.
The Verge: The oldest type of mechanical escapement, featuring the iconic "crown wheel."
Condition: The movement is in perfect working order. The fusee chain is intact, and the watch ticks with a strong, healthy beat—a testament to the high-grade craftsmanship of the Parisian workshops.
Abraham-Louis Breguet was the most celebrated watchmaker in history and a personal favorite of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Military Significance: Napoleon famously purchased three Breguet timepieces before his Egyptian campaign in 1798. This watch, depicting the Emperor, likely served as a high-status commemorative piece or a gift for a high-ranking officer of the Grande Armée.
A Symbol of Power: In the early 1800s, owning a silver Verge Fusee watch with the Emperor's likeness was more than a way to tell time—it was a declaration of loyalty to the First French Empire and a symbol of immense social standing.
Movement: Fully functional. Key-wind and key-set (original style winding).
Enamel: The portrait is exceptionally well-preserved with vivid colors and no significant loss.
Case: The heavy silver case shows light, honest wear and a beautiful antique patina. No major dents or repairs.
Dial: Crisp and clear; the enamel is free of major hairlines.
Due to the rarity and historical value of this piece, it will be shipped via Express Insured Courier with signature confirmation required.
It comes with a APPRAISAL CERTIFICATE FOR $9,000.00
