Pat Garrett and William Henry McCarty with his mother Catherine and Aunt Beatrice. This ferrotype was most likely taken in St. Clair Missouri. Pats romantic interest in the two sisters came to a quick halt after learning they both suffered from consumption- what we now call tuberculosis. Pat would give Henry both nicknames Billy the Kid and Billy Bonney (for the Bonnet hats his Mom and Aunt wore) Henry took to this nickname later signing his name William H. Bonney claiming to have been born in Missouri. This tintype is the origin of Billy the Kids story arc. Notice the word tin is spelled backwards-all ferrotypes used a process in which the horizontal is reversed.
