FANTASTIC FOUR #1 - CGC 9.4 - 1961 / HARLAN ELLISON COLLECTION
This is an incredible investment grade book with DOUBLE provenance.
First and foremost, this gorgeous book – which debuts the First Family of the Marvel Universe – is from the personal collection of Science Fiction Grand Master Harlan Ellison. Harlan was an iconic figure in speculative fiction and not only a comic collector, but his stories appear in issues of The Avengers, Batman, Chamber of Chills, Conan the Barbarian, Creepy, Daredevil, Justice League of America, Mystery in Space, Detective Comics, Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal, The Incredible Hulk, and Weird Science-Fantasy just to name a few. He even played himself on an episode of The Simpsons.
Secondly, this book was masterfully restored by paper conservationists, Matthew & Emily Meyers – whose next-level work is the best in the industry by a mile and it's not even close. Their work involves laboriously recreating each printing dot by hand using a microscope and was so technically superior that comic grading company, CGC, couldn't understand it. So they challenged their work and ended up losing a $10 million dollar lawsuit, awarded to the Meyers. There are about 100 books in the collecting world that have been restored by this dynamic duo – all mega-keys like this one, so they're incredibly hard to come by. (And I have detailed before and after photos of the process, including minor leaf-casting and color touch).
There are only 9 existing copies of FF#1 graded 9.4 – and this is one of them.
In total, there are approximately 3,000 copies of this book that have been graded by CGC, and this is in the top 0.4%.
But it's THE ONLY ONE with this kind of provenance.

Oh, and one other thing. This book was graded at a time when CGC and the Meyers were in the early stages of their disagreement, so the Meyers were receiving what I consider exceptionally unfavorable grading. For instance, this book was graded as trimmed on the top and bottom of the cover. Which was not indicated on the previous grade. Same with the page quality, which should be white. I would highly recommend taking this book back to CGC and having them grade it properly now that they know what to look for.
