rarely found in such excellent condition,no tears, no wear marks. i found this unique late 19th century javanese batik scarf for my dear late wife in the mountain town of Bukkatinggi on our indonesian travel trip in 1991.it is 8 feet long and 19" wide. she cherished it , wore it once in a while and kept it stored in our cedar chest over the decades.
it is stunning in every way, museum/ collector quality. the hand loomed natural tone silk was first hand drawn with the floral and bird designs you see in a delightful assymetrical arrangement using hot wax applied by a skilled artist through a tiny hand held bamboo beeker called a jhat. next it was hand dyed in plant based indigo, then dyed again using a darker dye from the sago palm resulting in the rich and warm brown tone you see. works such as this were done for only for wealthy brides as part of their wedding outfits. this is a one of a kind collector quality textile.
