ספר מנחת חינוך, ביאור על ספר החינוך - מספרי היסוד הלמדניים הנודעים ביותר שבכל הדורות. מאת הגאון רבי יוסף באב"ד רבה של טארניפול. שלושה חלקים כרוכים יחדיו בשערים נפרדים. מהדורה ראשונה בחיי המחבר. לעמברג, [תרכ"ט 1869]."חברו חד מגאונים המובהקים שבזמנינו הקדוש והטהור נ"י ומרוב ענותנותו העלים את שמו, ד' יגן עליו…"לפנינו מהדורה נדירה ומבוקשת שהדפיס המחבר בחייו. מרוב ענווה העלים המחבר הנודע את שמו מהספר, אולם הדבר לא מנה את תפוצתו ופרסומו הרב והוא הפך לאחד מהספרים הנפוצים, ונדפס לאחר מכן בעשרות מהדורות ונכתבו עליו ביאורים רבים. רק במהדורה השניה שנדפסה בלמברג תרמ"ט, כ-15 שנה לאחר פטירת המחבר, נכתב שם המחבר.מנחת חינוך אינו רק פירוש על ספר החינוך, אלא בעיקר הרחבה למדנית של הנושאים הנידונים בו והבאת מקורותיהם.הספר הלמדני מנחת חינוך שלפנינו התקבל בכל תפוצות ישראל כספר יסוד הלכתי ורבים משיעורי ראשי הישיבות עוסקים בחידושיו והיחס אליהם הוא כחידושי הראשונים. אולם לא רבים יודעים שמחבר הספר רבי יוסף באב"ד היה גאון חסידי והוא היה גיסו והחברותא של גדול אדמו"רי גליציה בעל הדברי חיים מצאנז ובזיווג שני היה חתנו של האדמו"ר רבי דוד מזבלטוב בנו של רבי מנחם מנדל מייסד שושלת קוסוב.
המחבר, רבי יוסף באב"ד [תקס"א-תרל"ד],מגדולי הרבנים והפוסקים בגליציה. נודע בעיקר בזכות ספרו המונומנטלי שלפנינו ונקרא על שמו "בעל המנחת חינוך". נולד ב-1801 בעיר פשוורסק שבגליציה לרב העיר ר' משה, נכד לרב יהושע העשיל באב"ד, רבה של טרנופול בעל שו"ת "ספר יהושע". מנעוריו התבלט בהתמדתו בתורה וכשרונותיו.היה נשוי בנישואין ראשונים לאחותו של רבי חיים הלברשטאם, האדמו"ר מצאנז. לאחר פטירתה נשא את בתו של רבי דוד הגר מזבלטוב (בנו של רבי מנחם מנדל מקוסוב). כיהן ברבנות בערים הוסקוב (הסמוכה לפשמישל), זברז', סניאטין והורודנקה, ובשנת 1857 (ה'תרי"ז) התמנה לרב בטרנופול, בה כיהן עד סוף ימיו.רבי יוסף היה מקורב מאוד לאדמו"רי החסידות בגליציה, ובעיקר לגיסו (מזיווג ראשון), רבי חיים הלברשטאם, איתו אף למד תקופה ארוכה, רבי נפתלי מרופשיץ, ורבי שמעון מירוסלב. היה גם חברו הקרוב של רבי יוסף שאול נתנזון. נפטר בתאריך העברי בו נולד, כ"ד באלול ה'תרל"ד, 1874. אחרי פטירתו מילא את מקומו בטרנופול בנו, ר' שמעון באב"ד.============

Fundamental Sefer: Minchat Chinuch - Three Parts. Sought-After First Edition

Sefer Minchat Chinuch- elucidation ofSefer HaChinuch- one of the most well-known fundamental scholarly works of all time, by the gaon Rabbi Yosef Baba"d, rabbi of Tarnopol. Three parts bound together with separate title pages. First edition, in the author's lifetime. Lemberg, 1869. Without the additions printed at the end of theseferthat are not part of the body of theMinchat Chinuch.

Rare, sought-after edition printed by the author in his lifetime. Due to his great humility, the author left out his name from thesefer, but this did not prevent its tremendous distribution and renown. It became one of the most popular and most printedsefarim, and was subsequently printed in dozens of editions, and many elucidations were written on it. The author's name was only included in the second edition, printed in Lemberg 1869, approximately 15 years posthumously.

Minchat Chinuchis not only a commentary onSefer HaChinuch, but it is primarily a scholarly expansion of the topics deliberated therein with references to their sources. Theseferwas printed many times.

This scholarly composition,Minchat Chinuch, was accepted in the entire Diaspora as a fundamental halachic work, and many lectures byrashei yeshivahdiscuss its insights, which are treated like those of theRishonim. However, not many know that the author of thesefer, Rabbi Yosef Baba"d, was a Chassidic gaon. He was a brother-in-law and study partner of the leading Admo"r of Galicia, the author ofDivrei Chaimof Sanz. In his second marriage, he was a son-in-law of the Admo"r Rabbi David of Zablutov, son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel, founder of the Kossov dynasty.
