This antique hand-carved wood temple fragment of Veeran, from South India, dating back to the early 19th century, is a unique piece of Indian culture. Madurai Veeran is a revered Tamil folk deity. He is a warrior-hero celebrated as a guardian spirit of villages in southern Tamil Nadu. The carving showcases Veeran grasping onto his sword and holding a bird in the other hand. The piece is carved from a signal piece of wood and includes immense detail. The intricate carvings and craftsmanship on this piece reflect the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of South India during this time period. The temple, where the carving once stood, was dismantled for the expandtion of an airport. The piece was previously purchased in February of 1974. It serves as a collectible item that showcases the historical and cultural significance of the region, making it a valuable addition to any collection of Asian artifacts.
