The WHITE HOUSE 200th Anniversary Egg
A creation and tribute to America by
Theo Fabergé
The WHITE HOUSE 200th Anniversary Egg commemorates the bicentennial of the original President’s House, a symbol of American freedom and democracy. It was released in 1999, and Theo Fabergé was the only international artist invited to contribute to this celebration. The porcelain shells were hand-crafted by American artists working in Brielle, New Jersey. The molds they used to pour the shells were produced in Theo’s workshops in Great Britain, as were the Eagle of Justice finial and the miniature replica of the original White House – all being shipped to the United States. The shells were then decorated and fired ten times, first to cure the bisque and then for each color enamel, the gold trim fired last.
It was an honor when both First Ladies Barbara Bush and Hilary Clinton were presented with their own White House Eggs. The creation was featured on a double segment of theToday Show, as well as reported on by the Washington Post and other media. And three generations of the Fabergé family attended ceremonies at the White House during the annual Easter Egg Roll. The full production of this egg was curtailed short of the full edition size due to political upheavals in Washington, the end coming with the impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton and the disbandment of the anniversary committee.
The egg not only depicts the birth of the White House but also more American history. The second President, John Adams, moved into the first official palatial White House in Washington, D.C. on November 1, 1800. The next day, he penned his famous benediction, quoted on this hand-painted porcelain egg. The front of the egg is embellished with a full-color, bas-relief depiction of the Great Seal of the United States framed by portraits of John and Abigail Adams on each side. The egg is crowned with a majestic American eagle in sterling silver and 24 karat gold. The eyes of the eagle are embellished with brilliant cut diamonds; the right eye of a white diamond views the olive branch of peace while the left eye of a black diamond looks toward the sheath of war arrows in its left talon. The egg is accented with four American Flags from 1777, 1800, 1912-1959 and the current Flag. In the Fabergé family historic tradition, the egg opens to reveal a surprise within -- a miniature White House in sterling silver and 24 karat gold, set upon a base marking the historic dates of 1800 and the bicentennial year 2000.
Closed production of 106 eggs.
