In an issue-length story, cowboys track a mysterious killer who leaves devil-like cloven footprints, and instead find Gene on the trail. Gene joins the hunt for the Cloven Hoof, which leads to an imprisoned miner, his hostage daughter, and a sinister figure named Rankin Dole.
