Louis Lormel (Louis Libaude, dit) launched, in October 1892, with the help of a few friends, his magazine \" L’Art littéraire. In December 1893 Alfred Jarry published his first text: the \"poem\" Lullaby to sleep the dead, signed \'Alfred-Henry Jarry\' (later reprinted in Minutes of Sand Memorial).
Relations between Lormel and Jarry cooled when the latter became a shareholder in the Mercure de Franceand then reserved his production for him. However, they reconciled at the end of Alfred Jarry\'s life. Upon his death in 1907 Louis Lormel published in the Phalange an item describing Jarry\'s style as \"the infinite variety of images colliding and intersecting in a sometimes obscure frame\".

Remy de Gourmont who since 1890, wrote to the Mercury and whose name was already known, was particularly benevolent for Literary Art. Number 11 of the newspaper contains prose from him: Le Camaldule. For the number 12, Stéphane Mallarmé, requested by me, sent me a sonnet then unpublished in France:\" At hours and without such a breath the emotion... Finally in issue 13 and final of the journal series, appeared a poem by Alfred Jarry: Lullaby to sleep the dead (became Lullaby of the dead to fall asleep) the first work he published. So I introduced Jarry. He was then 20 years old. Il had been out of Lycée Henri IV for two or three years, where he had apparently had a good education. It’s this high school he wants to talk about, at the beginning of his brochure on Albert Samain when referring to the surroundings of the Pantheon.

Alfred Jarry had come to live on Boulevard Saint-Germain, a small house located at the corner of Rue de Buci, opposite Rue du Four. This house is now demolished. He occupied a fairly large room on the first floor; his books were thrown to the ground, jumble. Jarry already had caged owls at home at the time and fed them horse meat and other trash.
This should be well known: Jarry was not poor then. It was even considered easy and helped me make Literary Art a magazine from 1894. He often told me aboutUbu Roi, like a piece of guignol he had once made and played himself with puppets at the Lycée de Rennes. Father Ubu was the caricature of a certain physics professor (hence the word pataphysics) named Hébert. He was, Jarry told me, \"breeding polyhedra.\"
At this time, Jarry may have been tuberculous but non-alcoholic, as he later became. He had been hospitalized in Amélie-les-Bains during his military service and had had as his bed neighbor the little Sugar Maker, Max Lebaudy. He was preparing a vague letter license, for which his family sent him gold. But he mostly cultivated heraldic science and dreamed of writing a book \"where everything would be by coat of arms\" [...]
