Professionally graded in November 2023 from its original owner collection, this comic book features one of the title’s most recognized and important covers. Created in 1933 by Cleveland-area high school students – writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster – Superman debuted in Action Comics #1 in 1938, establishing the costumed superhero archetype as a genre-defining protagonist. The success of “The Man of Steel” and his early sales demonstrated to publishers that comic books could be a far-reaching and profitable medium.

Due to its black cover, Superman #24 is condition-sensitive and was released at the height of World War II. Prominently featuring the American Flag, it would have been widely available on newsstands everywhere during this period. This issue is one of only four graded CGC VF+ 8.5, with just six examples graded higher, making it among the finest known examples of this iconic, patriotic comic book. Its exceptional color, white pages, and minimal wear are remarkable, given its age of 83 years. The book is particularly well-suited for the upcoming United States Semiquincentennial – America250 – and it would be difficult to find a nicer CGC 8.5 copy, regardless of title or issue.
