Inscribed Photograph signed: "Very Best Wishes to/Pietune Slone/ Sincerely/Valerie Hobson". B/w, 8x10. British actress Valerie Hobson (1917-1998) made poor marriage choices, on and off screen. She was The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and also of The Werewolf of London (1936). She moved on to more sophisticated roles in films like This Man is News (1938), Great Expectations (1946) and The Rocking Horse Winner (1949) and Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949, this time married to a serial killer in a comedy). In 1954 she retired from acting to marry John Profumo, a rising star in Britain's Conservative Party, subsequently Secretary of State for War in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Harold MacMillan. In 1963, Profumo was forced to resign after admitting he had lied to the House of Commons about his affair with glamorous call girl Christine Keeler, who was also sharing the bed of Soviet attaché and suspected spy Eugene "Honey Bear" Ivanov. Hobson stuck loyally by her husband through the international scandal, which also enveloped Viscount Astor, call girl Mandy Rice-Davies, nude photos of Keeler in the tabloids, and the suicide of Dr. Stephen Ward, who had introduced the politicians to Keeler and Rice-Davies. The sordid story was made into a 1989 film, Scandal. Typed note affixed on verso. Fine condition.
