Description: Magnificent Fred Johnson banner of over 20 unique clown faces. This was a custom banner painted for the entrance to a circus or sideshow. Johnson was fond of painting clowns and stated this was one of his largest commissions. He only did a handful of this type of banner and that's why it's so rare. The banner is signed "Fred Johnson" as well as "O'Henry Tent Company".
Fred Johnson was considered to be the most well-known painter of circus and sideshow banners. He worked for the O'Henry Tent and Awning Company for over 40 years from 1934-1974 in Chicago. Dimensions: 20' wide and 13' 8" high. There is a cutout in the middle of the banner so it could hang over the entrance of a funhouse.Condition: There are about 7 areas where the banner should be restored. Most of the damage are rips that could be repaired by placing canvas behind the damaged area. The colors are still good with some fading but it's very impressive.
Shipping: The banner is extremely heavy so I would prefer a local pickup. If you have a shipper, I'd be willing to work with them.
