Giant Fritz the Cat (1972) Production cel and background (22" x 28.5"), by John Vita, from the opening sequence of Fritz the Cat. This is an amazingly detailed aerial view of Washington Square Park as the center of New York City. This image was shown on screen for over 30 seconds...the longest by far of any image in the film. It also was the opening scene in the Fritz the Cat movie trailer. The line art was applied to a cel and the background is done in pastel watercolors which set the grungy ambiance of the film.
Fritz is Bakshi's first and most successful film. It was the first cartoon to get an x-rating, and set the stage for the introduction years later of more adult cartoons such as Heavy Metal, Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy.
