Antique Broderie Perse Quilt 1800-1830 3 Signatures 96" X 96" = 8' square, most likely from the Carolina's !! An incredible piece of American history. Almost 200 years ago a group of women quilters sat down and created this fabulous one of a kind quilt. 25 individual squares, each with a chintz fabric applique motif. Many florals, gorgeous Asian influence motifs, roosters, exotic birds and more ! Broderie Perse,French for "Persian embroidery", is a style of appliquewhich uses printed motifs from one fabric to create a design on a background fabric, Chintz was often imported from India at that time.Chintz typically has clearly defined, separated motifs, which were cut out and invisibly applied onto the ground fabric. Using motifs from the expensive, highly-prized fabric was a way to make the patterned fabric last longer.The typical intention was to create a scene from the motifs, but the decoration could also be random. Because the scale of the different motifs was not always considered, there might be a naive appearance to Broderie perse.It was popular in the late 18th century and early 19th centuries. This quilt has 3 beautiful teeny tiny signatures in ink, Fannie E. Wright, Pawnie E. Baern, and Elizabeth Bacon, these 3 signatures are visible in the 3 photos following the main photo. Holding the quilt up to the light one can see cotton seeds on the batting inside, one train of thought for dating quilts is seeing the seeds may indicate it was pre 1793, when Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which removed seeds from the cotton, there is some debate about this method of dating. In excellent condition structurally, and as seen in the photos there is quite a bit of staining throughout, it would be my guess that is has never been laundered. My mother was a quilt collector, and purchased this highly desirable quilt 55 years ago in 1971, it has been stored safely with acid free tissue in a cedar trunk since then. The many stains on this magnificent quilt become a part of its history, and preserving this piece would be paramount to its new owner. If one were to clean this quilt, I highly suggest a professional, and consulting with a textile conservationist, highly recommended is the Textile Conservation Workshop in South Salem, NY, under the auspices of Patsy Orlofsky, whom my mother Betty LaCasse, a textile restorer knew and highly respected.
