Vacheron & Constantin Silver & Red Chinoiserie Enamel Miniature 8-Day Desk Clock, c. 1930 — No. 798, with Key and Presentation Box

A rare Art Deco miniature desk clock by Vacheron & Constantin, Genève. The upright silver case is enamelled on all four sides and the top in a vivid vermilion red, with hand-gilded chinoiserie decoration — a pagoda in a landscape of pines and rockwork, a swallow in flight above, and reeds and blossoms on the top panel — framed by gilt corner brackets around the dial. Silvered dial with gilt Arabic numerals, a beaded minute track, blued-steel hands and SWISS at 6. The case sits on a stepped black lacquered plinth with a beaded silver border.

The back plate is stamped “FABRIQUÉ POUR VACHERON & CONSTANTIN / GENÈVE / N° 798”, “ARGENT 11524” and the Swiss 0.935 silver standard mark (see photos). 8-day key-wind movement; winding key included. It comes with its original red leather presentation box, gilt-tooled, with a hook clasp.

Rarity & provenance: These Vacheron & Constantin miniature enamel desk clocks were produced in tiny numbers around 1930 and seldom come to market. A near-identical example — No. 875, dated 1930, in the same silver and enamel with presentation box — sold at Christie’s for USD 15,625 against a ,000–6,000 estimate (sale record screenshots included in the photos for reference). This is No. 798, an earlier number from the same series.

Condition: Very good antique condition. Enamel is bright with strong gilding; light surface marks and small losses to the gilt decoration consistent with age (see photos). Back plate with tarnish and minor scratches. Presentation box shows honest wear — scuffing, cracking to the leather at the edges, and wear at the base (photographed from all sides). Wound and running. Not recently serviced — a service is recommended before daily use; timekeeping accuracy not guaranteed.
