Magnificent and important letter from the poet successively evoking his lectures on Edgar Allan Poe, the momentarily interrupted writing of his Small prose poems in favor of his pamphlet against Belgium.

"Dear Sir, this is the manuscript promised for so long, and completely redesigned. If I kept it here for two months it is because "I intended to give readings about Edgar Poe, and I needed all my work before my eyes. As we have agreed, you cut wherever you want, and I recommend proofs again.

Now I want to tell you again about Mr. Jousset [Auguste Jousset, butler of Dieppe’s hotel who helped Baudelaire financially], that I am responsible for delivering these two packages to you, and to whom I owe money. It would please him and surrender to me a very great service, to give him the approximate price of the three pieces. If it’s a violation of your home’s established usage, violate usage for me, thank you for that. We had calculated that the work with 1300 to 1500 lines should be a sum of 325 to 375" frs maybe a little more.

I was forced to momentarily release the poems and prose because I want to use my trip and I started a book about Belgium. I have to go to Namur, Liège, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp. Stunning monuments and abominable people everywhere. – but towards the end of the month I will turn to poems, and I’ll sort for you; that is, I’ll choose those that by their nature can fit your Revue, like the two you kept.

If you had anything to write to me, I would never be out of Brussels for more than three days. But in closing, please again do everything you can to relieve Mr. Jousset. Please accept dear Sir, the assurance of my perfect feelings.

He then settled in Brussels and initiated, in June 1864, the drafting of a fierce pamphlet against his short-lived host country." Belgium undressed, will remain unfinished. The first excerpts were published posthumously in 1887 and then in their entirety in 1952, under the title of Poor Belgium.

Émile Planat, dit Louis Marcelin (1825-1887) founder, in 1862, and director of La Vie parisienne had included in his review several texts by Baudelaire: chapter XI of the Modern Life Painter (April 23, 1864), two prose poems: Eyes of the Poor and Projects (July 2 and August 13, 1864) and, by Jules Claretie, the sonnet On the beginnings of Amina Groves (October 1, 1864).

Le Spleen de Paris, also known as Small Prose Poems, was published posthumously, in 1869, on the initiative of Charles Asselineau and Théodore de Banville, in the fourth volume of the " Complete works by Baudelaire, at Michel Lévy. The fifty pieces in this collection were written between 1857 and 1864.
