Great manuscript by Eugène Delacroix explaining the iconographic and symbolic course of a work that has now disappeared: the "Salon de la Paix" de l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris.

Salon de la Paix

1st Hercules exposed after birth is collected by Juno and Minerva. The latter holds him in her arms and introduces him to Juno who is preparing to breastfeed him.

2° Hercules having raised its famous columns at the edge of the world, rests on its work. The sun at the end of its career if plunges back into the sea.

3° He brings Alceste back from the underworld and returns her to Aabandons her husband.

4th He Kills the Centaur.

5° He chains Nereus sea god to force him to reveal the future to him.

6° He seizes Hippolytus’ harness queen of the Amazons.

7° It suffocates Antée. Lthe mother earth of this titan wants in vain to help him.

8° He delivers Hesione daughter of Laomedon, exposed to be devoured by a sea monster.

9° II skin with his hands the lion of Nemitted to take the skin.

10° Hercules still young between vice and pleasure.

11° He brings back on his shoulders and alive the Erymanthus boar he’d taken in the race. »

This manuscript d’Eugène Delacroix is rich in valuable teachings regarding the design of the decor of the Salon de la Paix, commissioned from the painter in December 1851, for the’Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Executed between 1852 and 1854, the artist’s paintings were destroyed by Commune fires on May 24, 1871. Today we know only a few sketches and descriptions of the time, such as the one issued by the creator himself in this manuscript.""

Interestingly, this text - with many variations - was published by Gustave Planche within la Revue des Deux Mondes (April 15, 1854 - pp. 305-321). A longtime art critic favorable to Romanticism and Delacroix in particular, Planche regularly commented on the painter’s works, public commissions, and shipments to the Salon.

It is thus very likely that these handwritten notes of Delacroix were intended for him, to guide him in the writing of his article and enlighten him on the artist’s symbolic will.

The match between Delacroix and Planche is quite proven. This revised text can be found in Notice sur l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris by A. Ferrier, published in 1855 (p.80-81).

Finally note Delacroix’s fun slip for whom Hercules hesitates between Vice and Voluptuousness, and not as history has it, between vice and virtue.
