Item DescriptionHMV Model 7(LAST Senior Monarch) Oak WoodBritish Victor Model 7 circa 1913-1920, also known as the Last Senior MonarchAmong all US and British Victor trumpet gramophones, this has the largest case size.(Close to Victor Model 5)Triple Spring (3 Springs)Top-of-the-line modelExtremely rare model!!! Due to extremely low production numbers (only 1,295 oak models produced), very few survive today.
As the final Senior Monarch, its materials and construction are top-tier!Fully functional after overhaul, beautiful date: 2019
Soundbox gasket also spring Unit Dimensions】Approx. Height 41.3 × Width 41.3 × Depth 21.6 cm
【Loudspeaker Dimensions】Approx. Diameter 57 cm × Length 68 part of a private collection, overhauls were performed approximately every 3-4 years when time permitted. While no images are available for this unit, it has undergone the same overhaul process as other phonograph images.
I also own about 10 other models of this type in my collection, but I do not keep overhaul images for collection-only phonographs...A video of this phonograph remains on YouTube and has not been deleted.
The wooden case is fully original and in superb condition. It has never been refinished, restained, repainted, or even treated with antique furniture wax.
The horn has been repainted but retains a pleasing appearance that does not detract from its character.
Please understand this is an antique item before purchasing.
Returns after purchase are not accepted.
If you are seeking a product in like-new condition, please refrain from purchasing.【 Additional Notes 】
This Senior Monarch model is rarer than the Junior Monarch or Monarch, with fewer units produced and fewer surviving today.
Average Specifications for Gramophone HMV Horn Phonographs
・Junior Monarch: 1-barrel spring・Monarch: 2-barrel spring
・Senior Monarch: 3-barrel spring
The Senior Monarch commanded an average selling price 2 to 3 times that of the 1-barrel spring model and about twice that of the 2-barrel spring model, making it the top-tier model.Due to its high cost, the 3-barrel spring model had low production numbers and few surviving units.
This particular HMV Model 7, in particular, had extremely low production numbers, resulting in very few surviving units. It is a gramophone bordering on legendary!!!(See red line on image 10)Comparison with the famous American Victor Company's triple-spring trumpet gramophones, the Victor Model 5 and Model 6:
・Victor Model 5: 68,582 units・Victor Model 6: 17,468 units・HMV Model 7: 2,712 units
This represents the estimated average number of surviving trumpet gramophones.
It's said that after 100 years, only about 1/10 remain. Personally, I feel it's closer to 1/15...
Model 7 had a total production run of less than 3,000 units, so the total number surviving worldwide is thought to be around 270.
In Japan, it's believed there are fewer than 10 owners.
In contrast, the Victor Model 5, with a total production of nearly 70,000 units, has a large number of surviving examples. While their condition varies, overseas websites and sales list 2 to 5 units monthly for over a decade (I've even seen around 10 units in a single month). Despite its excellent design and mechanism, it's readily available if you search, making its rarity value low.
Furthermore, this Model 7 exists in 6 variations:
These are divided into 1,295 Oak models and 1,417 Mahogany models, with three distinct mechanism specifications existing by production era:
Early 3-barrel mainspring models, early 2-barrel mainspring models, and late 32-type 2-barrel mainspring models.
The early and late 32-type mainsprings differ in shape, but their width and length (note: length and thickness may vary by mainspring manufacturer) are identical.
The most popular and highly sought-after model is undoubtedly the early triple-spring model.
2,712 units ÷ 6 types = 452 units
After 100 years, assuming only 1/10 remain, the estimated global surviving count for the oak wood model with 3 mainsprings is around 45 units.
While 45 units might seem exaggerated, the total number of surviving models with the same specifications currently listed for sale worldwide is likely under 100 units.
