Vintage Solari Udine Dator 5 Clock - Works Great - 1950s - 110 volts - 24 Hour:
$3000.00
Vintage 1950’s Solari Udine Dator 5 Clock in working condition. 24 Hour.
Approx. 13.5x11.5x4.5 inches
Item was in storage for 30 years, so has had little use (see photos for excellent interior condition).
Item tested overnight - kept excellent time, and all parts flipped as expected.
(Even though internally it is in fantastic shape, it is always advised to have an expert give it a once over. Item worked perfectly when tested, but can not guarantee that it will function the same way after shipping.).
Comes with extra spring taped to the inside case by a previous owner.
Due to the sticker on the back it looks like it was owned by a company in Glendale, CA that supplied clocks to businesses, so this clock has an industrial background and seems it was more than likely made specifically for the US market because it is 110 volts. Name of a previous owner is also found taped inside - obviously he was very proud of this unit.
Was a pole mounted unit - with mounting plate and screw still attached.
In as found condition - no restoration work was attempted - age appropriate wear to the case, with the plexiglass cover being in really nice shape (and will look even nicer once polished).
Will be carefully packed and insured - but, if you are able to pick it up that would be best.
Note - the clock is all original - the only thing that was missing was the original electrical cord. Due to the frail nature of the phenolic board of the AC connector, we removed the connector and wired the cord directly to the clock. Cord is safely secured inside the unit. Can easily be returned to 100% original by locating correct cord and repairing & reinstalling the phenolic board of the AC connector (which will be included with the original screws that hold it in place).
Side Note: The label taped inside the clock states the clock belonged to Julian Wasser in Sept 1968. In researching Wasser it seems there is a strong possibility the clock was owned by famed Los Angeles photographer Julian Wasser who died in 2023. Wasser is known for celebrity photographs, as well as one he took of a nude Eve Babitz playing chess with Marcel Duchamp at the Pasadena Museum of Art in 1963. He also took one of the last photos of Robert F Kennedy in 1968 - moments before he was assassinated. This would need more research, but if it was his clock, chances are it might appear proudly in photos he may have staged or possibly show up in photos of his home or studio.
Side Note update: contacted Arcana Books on the Arts in Los Angeles who knew Julian Wasser - was told: “I have never heard of another Julian Wasser, and him living in Beverly Hills in the sixties makes perfect sense. I only have his later cellphone number which dosesn't match, but I cannot imagine this belonging to anyone else.”
That isn’t proof by any means, but there is a definite possibility that it might have appeared in photos he took or photos of his home or studio if he did own it. Worth looking into this some more.
