Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with green treats galore! If you’re looking for your kiddo to help out in the kitchen, check out these holiday-themed recipe ideas. Not only are these goodies seasonal specialties, the activities behind them can help your child to learn about the science of colors, explore through their senses and build fine motor skills.
Shamrock Green S’mores
Turn the traditional dessert stack into a St. Paddy’s Day sweet. Magically transform plain white marshmallows into shamrock green goodies. Start with a cup of your child’s favorite green-colored powdered drink. Mix the powder with water, following the manufacturer’s directions. Soak marshmallows in the drink for 10 minutes. Take out the green marshmallows and let them dry. Place a dried marshmallow onto a graham cracker, add a piece of white chocolate and cover with another graham. Heat the stack in the microwave until the marshmallow slightly expands. Let the treat cool before handling or eating.
Green Pudding Cups
Explore the science of color mixing with this easy activity. Give your child yellow and blue food coloring and ask them to create green. They will need to mix the two primary colors in a bowl or cup until they form a secondary color–green! After mixing the food coloring, add it to a batch of vanilla pudding. Mix again to turn the whitish dessert into a green treat. Spoon the shamrock shade of pudding into a clear glass. Add more of the green food coloring to whipped topping. Spoon the whipped topping onto the pudding. Complete the dessert with a layer of green sprinkles or crystal sugar.
Shamrock Cupcake Cake
Repeat the color mixing steps to make more green food coloring. Use this batch to turn white cupcake batter into a shamrock shade. Mix the batter and pour it into green cupcake wraps. Bake the cakes and let them cool. Add more of the food coloring to white icing and frost the cupcakes. Arrange the treats into a shamrock shape on a platter or cookie tray.
